Should you choose foundation or complexion enhancer? It depends on your needs, desires, and skin type. A radiant complexion and successful makeup involves choosing the perfect texture and colour.

Complexion enhancer

Generally found in liquid form with a light texture and an almost translucent colour, complexion enhancer will illuminate your face. It helps highlight the contours of certain parts of your face such as the cheeks or the eyebrow arches to make your face even and brighten up essential areas. Usually made of tightening and smoothing ingredients, complexion enhancers, and microscopic light reflectors, applied by themselves, complexion enhancers produce a “second skin” effect and a healthy glow by illuminating certain areas. This type of product is also an excellent ally for hiding little imperfections, shadows, or fine lines. It can also be applied before or after the foundation, in which case it serves as a makeup base or fixer, and it will give the makeup a sophisticated appearance. If your complexion seems dull and faded despite the foundation, or if you find that your face lacks definition, a complexion enhancer should be one of your essentials.

Foundation

Often thicker in texture than complexion enhancer, foundation is more covering and colouring, and it will mattify your whole face in just a single application. It therefore meets the needs of people seeking to smooth, correct, and even out their complexion quickly and over a long period. It’s also now often enriched with moisturizing and anti-aging ingredients, anti-pollution complexes, UV protectors, and optical technologies that moisturize, protect, and erase wrinkles, pimples, and rashes. Found in liquid cream, compact, or powder form, depending on its texture, it will be more or less easy to remove when taking off your makeup. If foundations are often criticized for creating a mask effect and clogging the pores, that’s because some of them contain overly heavy oils that create an unattractive thickness. If you absolutely have to have a foundation but want to avoid this problem, choose a lighter, next-generation foundation.

It all depends on your skin type

Your skin type – that is to say, the sensitive, dry, oily, or mature feel of your epidermis – should also be considered when choosing the makeup for your complexion. While previously, people only chose their makeup to improve their appearance, these days, they also choose it for its benefits for their skin.

Sensitive skin

Since sensitive skin can sting, tingle, redden, or become irritated, you should avoid aggravating it even more and choose a liquid or cream-based complexion enhancer enriched with soothing ingredients. It’s also best to choose fragrance-free, hypoallergenic formulas without too many preservatives.

Dry skin

Sometimes rough and dull, dry skin should be covered, protected, and moisturized a bit more. In this case, a cream-based foundation mostly made of water or enriched with hyaluronic acid will be your skin’s best ally. Its application can also be complemented by the use of a mineral powder.

Oily skin

A breeding ground for acne, shine, and dilated pores, oily skin should only be covered by light formulas. Complexion enhancers enriched with mattifying active ingredients are therefore preferable in this case.

Mature skin

For skin that’s prone to sagging, wrinkles, and fine lines, choose a foundation enriched with antioxidants and anti-aging active ingredients that stimulate collagen production. Combining care and beautifying makeup, it’s a choice that’s in perfect harmony with the needs of mature skin.
